Day 12

Today was a mixed day for Hank.  Although the day started quietly enough, by mid-morning he was having episodes of "roving eyes."  His eyes were darting around very quickly and were sometimes accompanied by a nervous tick motion of the head to the left.  Surprisingly, he was still responsive to external stimuli during these episodes, including sudden sounds and touch.

The seizure medication levels in Henry's blood had dropped a little lower than our neurologist wanted them.  This was not a concern in and of itself, but it appears to have gotten too low to keep the seizures at bay.  They increased his phenobarb and gave him a half dose of Ativan.  He was a very sleepy baby for the rest of the day.

And now for the good news.  Despite Hank's drowsiness, when the neonatologist pushed on the back of his tongue, he gave her a full-fledged gag!  I wanted her to do it over and over, but she didn't seem to think that was a good idea.  Hopefully this will continue for the speech pathologist tomorrow.  We were glad to have some good news to accompany the return of seizures.

Hank is doing great with his increase to 60 mL of milk.  At this rate, he could be completely IV-less in 1 or 2 days.

We had many visitors today, but we didn't do such a great job of photographing them.  The Doyles brought us a tasty lunch, and Elaine, Cathy, and Megan brought us an enormous gift basket.

Tomorrow, Hank's grandparents from Pennsylvania will be paying him a visit.  We're all excited for them to meet their first grandchild.

Yay for the gag reflex! Here's hoping he can be off his feeding tube really soon and tomorrow brings a return to the decrease in seizures. Love the photos of you having those wonderful cuddles. Thinking of you all, Px

Very glad for the gag.
And I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that "nervous tick motion of the head to the left" just means he already has good taste in music.
Seriously, though. Very glad to see baby boy without so many tubes. Can't wait to meet him.
